Problems in composite materials

chemical engineering

Short glass fibre reinforced composites has been produced from 40 vol % glass fibre (TS of the fibre is 700 MPa and Young's modulus of the fibre is 50 GPa) with polypropylene matrix (TS of the PP is 30 MPa and Young's modulus of PP is 2 GPa) using extruder. Calculate the theoretical tensile strength and Young's modulus of composites using rule of mixture. Calculate the theoretical tensile strength and Young's modulus of composites using modified rule of mixture considering fibre alignment in 2D random.

Explanation / Answer

Volume % of glass fibre = 40%

Tensile strength of fibre = 700 MPa

Youngs modulus of fibre = 50 GPa = 50000 MPa

Volume % of polypropylene = (100 - 40%) = 60%

Tensile strength of polypropylene = 30 MPa

Youngs modulus of polypropylene = 2 GPa = 2000 MPa

(i). Using rule of mixtures:

Tensile strength of composites, TSc = 0.40 * 700 + 0.60 * 30

= 280 + 18

TSc = 298 MPa

Young's modulus of composites, Ec = 0.40 * 50000 + 0.60 * 2000

= 20000 + 1200

Ec = 21200 MPa
