The fractured ribs would have damaged the lungs resulting in leakage of air from the luns into the chest cavity. This would generate a pressure on the chest wall creating resistance for the expansion of the lungs. As a reult of this, it wont be able to hold the normal volume of air as it would have on a normal day. This condition is termed as pneumothorax.

Removing air from the surrounding would help vacate the area helping the lungs to expand normally.
