Question
(6 Points) We have discussed multiple research papers this summer session and the types of research have varied greatly in their methods and employment. Below is a list of a sampling of these methods. Rank each from the most convincing to least convincing types of evidence produced and write a short paragraph supporting your opinion. a. Testing potential treatments on cell lines b. Accessing databases to determine correlation between behaviors and cancer onset c. Testing potential treatments on xenograph mice d. Results of Clinical trials of potential treatments e. Using Surveys to determine correlation between behaviors and cancer onset
Explanation / Answer
The various methods and their ranking as the basis for the convincing of the method. out of the five methods loisted below :
a. Testing potential treatments on cell lines
b. Accessing databases to determine the correlation between behaviours and cancer onset
c. Testing potential treatments on xenograft mice
d. Results of clinical trials of potential treatments
e. Using surveys to determine the correlation between behaviours and cancer onset
I would rank them this way:
d. Results of clinical trials of potential treatments
c. Testing potential treatments on xenograft mice
a. Testing potential treatments on cell lines
we would discuss these three first as they are somewhat related. if you arrange them to most convincing to less convincing as above and the reason is that testing new treatments by clinical trails is more reliable compared to xenografts and to cell lines. however to start with we would go from cell lines, xenografts and then to clinical trails.
Coming to another set, I would rank them as this way below
e. Using surveys to determine the correlation between behaviours and cancer onset
b. Accessing databases to determine the correlation between behaviours and cancer onset
and the reason would be like this surveys help to determine the correlation between the behaviours to cancer compared to less comparing to databases. The reason sometimes databases are built on a certain set of populations and it may not or may be generalised. let's take an example cancers and the behaviours the way people eat in two different regions of the world cannot be generalised for their lifestyle behaviours and cancers.
