Question
Nervous System (CNS), answer them all with just few words no need for details and I will rate you.
1- Clinically, what circumstances are EEGs used for? A doctor runs 2 EEG tests on you: one while awake and one while asleep. They notice that your brain activity is the same for both tests. Your doctor grows very concerned and determines that you have a sleep disorder. Do you agree with the outcome? What is a plausible explanation for why the results might have been the same?
2-What are the primary functions of the cerebellum? What does it mean that it is a “comparator”? Preprogrammed (and rehearsed) motor skills are executed by the cerebellum. Can you provide some examples of these?
3-If an individual has high visual cortex activity, active memory areas and very low frontal cortex activity, the individual must be in which stage of their sleep cycle?
Explanation / Answer
1) Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a non invasive test used to determine the functioning of brain. This is used to diagnose several clinical conditions like,
Alpha waves are seen in normal awake individuals and theta waves are observed during sleep. Presence of excessive theta waves in normal awake individuals is due to reduced oxygen uptake by the cortical grey matter. It can occur in conditions like head injury and sleep disorders. The EEG pattern in the state of relaxed wakefulness produces similar EEG pattern both during sleep and awake state. Therefore, the diagnosis may or may not be a sleep disorder.
2) The primary functions of cerebellum are,
Cerebellum received sensory inputs from spinal cord and sends it to cerebral cortex and coordinates voluntary muscle movements. So it is called as comparator. Preprogrammed motor skills that are executed by cerebellum are cycling, driving a car and swimming.
3) High visual cortex activity, active memory areas and very low frontal cortex activity is seen in REM sleep.
