Question

Why does urine in people with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus smell sweet?

Because more ADH is present, therefore concentrating glucose in the urine.

Because the loop of Henle is leaky and allow glucose in easily.

Because not all glucose can be reabsorbed in the proximal tubule due to limited number of transporters.

Because more glucose is secreted from the proximal convoluted tubule

1)

Because more ADH is present, therefore concentrating glucose in the urine.

2)

Because the loop of Henle is leaky and allow glucose in easily.

3)

Because not all glucose can be reabsorbed in the proximal tubule due to limited number of transporters.

4)

Because more glucose is secreted from the proximal convoluted tubule

Explanation / Answer

1) Not be right answer because ADH regulate water reabsorption not glucose. Excess of glucose is reason for this.

2) Not be right option because loop of Henle have no role in leakage or glucose transport.

3) This is right answer because renal tubules cannot reabsorb glucose above renal threshold value i.e. 375mg per 100 ml of filtrate in kidneys. In case of diabetes Mellitus value of glucose exceeds from 500 mg per 100 ml of filtrate. This is due to limited number transpoters in proximal convoluted tubules. Thus excess of glucose excreted in urine which give sweet smell and ketones also produced during this process are also responsible for smell.

4) Not be right answer as explained above.
