Name two ways in which we have disrupted the natural carbon cycle. (5 points possible) a. Explain the type of disruption (dose makes the poison, changes in chemical equilibrium, and/or presence of non-biodegradable chemicals.) (10 points possible) b. Provide a general chemical reaction to explain the overall nature of each disruption, and provide at least one environmental consequence of one of the disruptions you have chosen to discuss. (15 points possible) (2) The general public often expects solutions to our environmental issues that have zero risk. Explain in less than 200 words whether this is possible, supporting your answer with a thoughtful discussion of what risk is and how to calculate risk.

1) a) Deforestation.

b)Emission of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide from vehicles.

c)Soil pollution,air pollution and water pollution.

d)Burning fossil fuels(factory emissions).

   e)Emission Greenhouse gases from various processes.

a) Deforestation :

Forests plays an important role in the carbon cycle.The trees and other plants in the forests takes the carbon dioxide for their respiration through the process of photosynthesis.

CO2+H20       -------- C6H12O6 + O2     (in the presence of sunlight)

When one tree fell and began to dacay it releases some amount of carbon it stored to atmosphere.This carbon is uses by the other fresh plants and neutralises the carbon amount if excess present.Forests have an enormous capacity to absorb carbon from the atmosphere. If these are replaced with buildings, then removal of carbon from the atmosphere by photosynthesis will be reduced.

Non-degradable products such as plastics damage the soil and the useful organisms.This affects the overall surface soil carbon amount.Soil erossion also makes the same problems.The poisonous gases evolving from different factories and vehicles makes the atmosphere as polluted and this will increase the greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and chloroflouro carbons.If the excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere means global warming is more.This will lead to the imbalance of carbon present in earth.

b) Burning fossil fuels:-

Burning of fossil fuels such as coal,oil in factories and from the emission of vehicles all leads to the heavy disposal of poisonous methane gas,which largely plays a role in disrupting carbon cycle.

CH4---------------------> CO2 (partially oxidised to carbon dioxide in the atmosphere)

CH4 -Methane is one of the most important poisonous gas produced as liberated from factories that is energy production from coal and natural gas; from vehicles, waste disposal in landfills, raising ruminant animals (cattle and sheep) and biomass burning.

This increases the overall amount of CO2 in the atmosphere and thus affects the carbon cycle leading to the greenhouse effect and then to global warming(warming of earth).

2) Stop industrial revolution:-

Now a days the things we are depending in our life, everything is factory products only. The number of factories in our world increases gradually.For building these we are cutting our trees and use so many agricultural fields(Deforestation and change the use of lands).Factories uses so many chemical processes which pollutes our soil,atmosphere and water sources too.There for energy they are burning coal,oil and gases(fossil fuels) which emits the poisonous chemical Methane and carbon dioxide.All these affects plants and other organisms.

Increase Forestation and fight against deforeststion:-

Most of the excess carbon dioxide is being taken out by the trees and other vegetations for their respiratory purpose and thus keep a balance to carbon cycle. So its important to plant more trees around you, especially near to the factory ares.

Avoid soil pollution:-

The excess carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere also taken by the surface soil. So try to avoid the harmful things which makes our soil polluted.Stop soil erossion by planting mangrooves.

Depend on natural energy resources:-

Use most of the natural energy resources such as wind energy,solar energy,tide energy and biogas for our various needs instead of using fossil fuels. The fossil fuels such as coal,oil and natural gas(methane) are non-reversible energy resources and also they are very harmful to earth.They are polluting our earth and results in global warming.

Use biodegradable oils and gases:-

Now so many vehicles are there around us.Every vehicles emit out poisonous gases everyday.Petrol and diesel are non-reversible energy sources.So instead of that we can use eco friendly biodiesel and hydrogen fuels.Uses of these will minimize the environmental pollution.And also check often vehicle pollution testing.
