Question

~After the two products mixed they turned into a liquid, or slushy-like, mixture

~The test tube was freezing and a white layer coated the bottom of the tube (up to where the slush ended)

~The color was a pale-yellow color too

1. Is barium hydroxide octahydrate and ammonium thiocyanate an exothermic or endothermic reaction? And if you could plase explain to me the heat transfer that would occur in reaction?

2. Which has the greatest chemical energy in this reaction, the reactant or the products? (what's the evidance shown)

3.Which is more disordered in this reaction, the reactants or the products?

~I'm just curious, but why does this reaction proceed spontanously? (for 2 and 3)?~

Initial temperature 26.0°C Final temperature 15°C

Explanation / Answer

Ba(OH)2.8H2O(s) + 2NH4SCN(s) ---> Ba(SCN)2 (aq)+ 2NH3(g) + 10H2O(l)

The above reacrion is Endothermic, because heat is absorbed by the reaction from the surroundings, H is positive.

Since the reaction is endothermic means energy is absorbing by the reaction suggests that Reactants are more energitic than products

S is positive because of the formation of ammonia gas and liquid water. This reaction is entropically driven.

The reaction occurs spontaneously, because G is negative.

The effect of increased entropy more than compensates for the positive enthalpy change.
