Question
The ache, or "burn", you feel in your muscles during strenuous exercise is caused by the accumulation of lactic acid, which has the structure shown below. The hydrogen atom in the COOH group is acidic, and it can be removed using base to form a COO^- group. To determine the concentration of a solution of lactic acid, a chemist titrates a 15.75 mL sample of it with 0.1010 M NaOH, and finds that 12.08 mL of titrant are required to reach the equivalence point. What is the concentration of the lactic acid solution in moles per literExplanation / Answer
To find out the concentration of any titration, we use the following equation.
M1*V1/n1 = M2*V2/n2
here M1 is concentation of lactic acid which is to be calculated
V1 is Volume of lactic acid taken = 15.75ml
n1 is the number of moles of lactic acid =1 ( lactic acid consist of only one COOH group from which H+ is released)
M2 is the concentration of NaOH = 0.1010M
V2 is the volume of NaOH consumed in the titration
n2 is the number of moles of NaOH = 1 (NaOH has only one OH which is released as OH-)
since n1 and n2 are equal to one the above equation becomes
M1 * V1 = M2 * V2
M1 = M2 * V2/V1
M1 = 0.1010 * 12.08/15.75 = 0.775M
Hence lactic acid concentration M1 is 0.0775M
