Question
The purpose of the experiment was to produce Benzhydrol through a reduction reaction of benzophenone and sodium borohydride.
The IR spectra of the benzhydrol was obtained.
1.Compare the infrared spectra of the produced benzhydrol with a literature source. Note the differences.

Solution :-
1) benzophenone contains the carbonyl group therefore it shows the IR peak at the 1730 cm-1 which is the characteristic peak for the carbonyl group
The product Benzhydrol contains the OH group the C=O of the reactant is converted to the OH therefore the 1730 cm-1 is disappeared
So the IR spectrum given for the benxhydrol is matches with the literature spectra since it do not contain any peak at about 1700 cm-1 means all the reactant is converted into the product.
2) If the all the reactant is not converted into the benzhydrol then the mixture contains the product and reactant both molecules
So in the IR spectrum it will show both frequencies for the OH grouo and C=O groups
So it can shows the peak at about 1730 cm-1 which is form the C=O group of the reactant.
so the peak at 1730 cm-1 can be shown to indicate the reactant C=O group frequency.
