Question
For each of the questions on this worksheet refer to the phase diegram for mysterious compound X. What is the critical temperature of com,pound X? If you were to have a bottle containing compound X in your closet, what phase would it most likely be in? At what temperature and pressure will all three phases coexist? If I have a bottle of compound X at a pressure of45 atm and temperature of 100degree C, what will happen if I raise the temperature to 400 C Why can't compound X be boiled at a temperature of 200degree C? If I wanted to. could I drink compound XdegreeExplanation / Answer
1) from the graph, the critical temperature of X is approximately 360C.
2)In the closet, the temperature is 25C and pressure is 1 atm. Hence it will exist in gaseous form.
3)It will be at the critical point.
Temp = 360 K
Pressure= 50 atm.
4)P/T=constant
so,
let the fimal presssure be P.so,
45/(273+100)=P/(400+273)
or P=81.193
so the new pressure will be 81.193 atm
5) since X will sublime at 200C instead of boiling.
6)No you cannot, since at room temperature will be either at solid or gaseous form.
