Question
Purification of nickel can be achieved by electrorefining nickel from an impure nickel anode onto a pure nickel cathode in an electrolytic cell. How many hours will it take to plate 10.5 kg of nickel onto the cathode if the current passed through the cell is held constant at 44.0 A? Assume the nickel in the electrolytic solution is present as Ni2 Number Previous Give Up & View Solution e Check Answer Next Hint Do a series of conversions to find the time needed to plate out 10.5 kg of Ni. The following equalities may be useful: no 196.485 c 1 mol e-96,485 CExplanation / Answer
m = 10.5 kg of nickel
I = 44 A
Ni +2 ´+ 2e-- --> Ni(s)
then
we require 2 mol of electrons per mol of Ni
find total mol of Ni
mol = mass/MW = 10500/58.69 = 178.906 mol of Ni are required
therefore we need 2x that amount of mol of e-
178.906 *2 = 357.812 mol of e-
calculate total charge
C = mol e- * F = 357.812*96500 = 34528858 C
find current
I = C/t
t = C/I = 34528858 /44 = 784746.7727
t = 784746.7727/3600 = 217.98 hours
