Question

One way to cool hot teas is to sitr it with a cold spoon. Assume you have a stryfoam cup with an insulated lid filled with 205mL of hot tea at 83.2 degrees celcius (CAg = 0.233 J/g* K, Ctea= 4.184J/g*K, CAl= 0.900 J/g*K). Assume no heat is transferred between the tea and the cup, and that the tea has the same density as water (1.00 g/mL).

A. If you stir it with a 99g silver spoon, what will the final temperature of the tea be (in degrees celcius) if the initial temperature of the spoon is 22 degrees celcius?

B. Would an aluminum spoon of the same mass and initial temperature be more or less effective at cooling the tea? Conciseley explain reasoning

Explanation / Answer

A.
mass of tea, m1 = density * volume = 1 g/ml * 205 ml = 205 g
Let the final temperature be T oC

Heat lost by tea = heat gained by spoon
m1*C1*(83.2 - T) = m2*C2*(T-22)
205*4.184*(83.2 - T) = 99*0.233*(T-22)
71362.304 - 857.72 T = 23.067 T - 507.474
T = 81.6 oC

Answer: 81.6 oC

B.
Since CAl > CAg
Aluminium will decrease the temperature even further.
So
Aluminium will be more effective
