Question

HELP?!

Some of you will be given a 1: 1 volume mixture of cyclohexane : toluene and asked to separate the two compounds by distillation. What property is different about the two molecules that enables them to be separated by distillation? What purpose does a Condenser play in distillations? How are distillations useful, why do we learn how to do them? If you are boiling a solvent in a flask with a hotplate, do you expect the temperature of the boiling solvent and the hotplate to be the same? If not, which do you think is hotter?

Explanation / Answer

The vapor pressure of cyclohexane and toluene will be taken advantage of in separating them. Normal boiling point is 114 deg.c for toluene and that of cyclohexane is 80.74 deg.c Condenser cools the vapor and also ensures that reflux is provided in the form of liquid and product is withdrawn in the form of liquid Distillation is major unit operation that enables separation by creating a vapor phase. It is used for separation of constituents of air by cryogenic distillation No the themal conductivity of flask decides what is the temperature of hot plate and solvent. Hot plate will be hotter.
