Question

Mr. and Mrs. C. returned from a weekend of downhill skiing to find their 9-year-old son, Eddie, with bloody urine. About 6 weeks earlier, they had spent a week skiing, during which Eddie had a severe sore throat that was not treated because his teenage sitter did not take him to a physician. Eddie was taken to his pediatrician where it was established that he had been lethargic and without appetite for the past 10 days and had complained of back pain. His physical examination showed a temperature of 101° F and a blood pressure of 140/102. The remainder of the physical was noncontributory. Eddie

Explanation / Answer

The likely cause of Eddie's symptoms and signs is post-streptococcal Glomerulonephritis. The pediatrician will give antibiotics to relieve his symptoms. ---------------------------- As the kidneys are present at our back, back pain occurs with any infection of kidneys. Throat infection was due to the streptococcus infection. The infection of Streptococcus causes hematuria, hypertension and fever. The blood, protein and RBC in urine is seen as the kidney is no longer able to segregate the wastes from the blood due to destruction of the basement membrane.
