Question

Application of Gas Laws: Show all calculations!

a.) How many grams of NO2, nitrogen dioxide, are contained in 0.500L of the gas at STP?

b.) Calculate the density of No2 gas, in grams per liter, at 110Celcius and 12 atm.

c.) Calculate the molae mass of a gas if 0.125g of the gas occupies 93.3 mL at STP.

d.) On a spring morning (15 C Celsius) you fill your tires to a pressure of 2.25 atmoshperes. As you ride along, the tires heats up to 45 Celsius from the friction on the road. What is the pressure in your tires now?

e.) What volume of H2 is formed at STP when 6.0g of Al is treated with excess NaOH? 2NaOH+2Al+6H2O---->2NaAl(OH)4+3H2(g)

Explanation / Answer

A) STP

T = 273 K , P = 1atm V = 0.5 L

w = mass of No2 = PVMwt/RT = 1*0.5*46/(0.0821*273) = 1.026 grams

b) D = density = Pmwt/RT = 12*46/(0.0821*383) = 17.55 g/L

c) Mwt = wRT/pv = 0.125*0.0821*273/(1*0.0933) = 30 g/mol

d) P1/T1 = P2/T2

2.25/15 = P2/45

p2 = 6.75 atm

e) 2NaOH+2Al+6H2O---->2NaAl(OH)4+3H2(g)

No of mole of Al = 6/27 = 0.22 mol

V = volume of H2 = nRT/P = 0.22*0.0821*273/1 = 4.93 L
