Question
These are the question from the lab. In this lab, we were measuring the carbon dioxide by mix different chemicals in different trials.
1- Baking Soda (NaHCO3): 0.33g of NaHCO3 mixed with 14 mL of 0.5-M acetic acid (CH3COOH). The volume of CO2 produced is 49 ml. Also, while we used mL CO2 / g baking soda, we get 148.48 ml/g.
2- Alka-Seltzer: 0.33g of Alka-Seltzer mixed with distilled water. The volume of CO2 produced is 8 ml. Also, while we used mL CO2 / g Alka-Seltzer, we get 124.24 ml/g.
3- Rolaids: 0.33g of Rolaids mixed with 0.5 M hydrochloric acid (HCl). The volume of CO2 produced is 23 ml. Also, while we used mL CO2 / g Rolaids, we get 69.7 ml/g.
Does the mass of Rolaids provide a lot of ''relief''? Justify your answer. 2. RoIaIds is sold as an antacid, but what other health benefit may be obtained in ingesting the active ingredient in it? 3. If some of the carbon dioxide dissolves In the water in the graduated cylinder, then what is the effect on the calculated ml/g?Explanation / Answer
1. The mass of Rolaids provides lot of relief. It reacts effectively with the HCl which is the same acid present in the stomach to produce CO2. The mass of CO2 produced is also optimum for the nutralization of acid as per the requirement.
2. Rolaid like tums has CaCO3, so they act not only as an atacid by neutralizing the acid in the atomach but also as an suppliment for Calcium. Calcium addition specially for women is very helpful to prevent osteoporosis.
3. If some of the CO2 dissolves in water, it would form H2CO3. This will not add to the effective CO2 released and thus the CO2 produced in ml per g of Rolaids would be calculated less than the actual value.
