Question

Question 1) Sulfur dioxide (SO2 ) is a gas that is a polluant responsible for acid rain. It can be formed by the following reaction: H2S (g) + O2 (g) SO2(g) + H2O(g) (unbalanced) What volume of 2M H2S , in L, is required to react with excess O2 to produce enough SO2 to fill a cylinder that is 41ft long and has a diameter of 14ft at a pressure of 571 torr and 19C?

Question 2)

If 2.01g of the vapor of a volatile liquid is able to fill a 420-mL flask at 300C and 745mm Hg, what is the molecular weight of the liquid?

**Write answer in decimal form to one decimal place.**

Question 3)

An Erlenmeyer flask that weighs 93.667g has a quantity of liquid vaporized in it at 96.4oC and a pressure of 1583.8 torr. The mass of the cooled flask is 94.345g. When the flask is filled with water, the mass of the flask and water is 268.92g.

(a). Determine the molecular weight of the unknown liquid.    g/mol    ** Write answer in decimal form to one decimal place,

(b). Given the following compounds:

  Liquid             Molecular Weight (g/mole)

Pentane                     72.2

Acetone                     58.1

Methanol                   32.0

Hexane                      86.2

Ethanol                      46.1

Propanol                    60.1

What is the identity of the unknown liquid?

Explanation / Answer

Q 1)

volume = Pi r^2 h = 3.14 x (14/2)^2 x 41 = 6308.26 ft^3 = 1.79 x 10^5 L

1 ft^3 = 28.3168 Lit

P = 571 torr = 0.751 atm

T = 273 + 19 = 292 K

PV = nRT

0.751 x 1.79 x 10^5 = n x 0.0821 x 292

n = moles = 5600

molarity = moles / volume

2 = 5600 / volume

volume = 2800 L

volume of H2S = 2800 L

Q 2)

Question 2)

V = 420 ml = 0.42L

T = 273+300 = 573K

P = 745/760 = 0.980 atm

P V = n RT

0.980 x 0.42 = n x 0.0821 x 573

n = 0.0087

moles = mass / molar mass

0.0087 = 2.1 / molar mass

molar mass = 241.4 g/mol
