Question

doped AgBr and Ag cell electoral chemistry 7. Doped AgBr is a solid that conducts silver ion (like a so called. electrolyte) and that conducts electron (like a so called. metal). Find the electronic (as opposed to ionic) contribution of electrical conduction for a cell consisting of doped Agl3r between two Ag electrodes (sec figure to right). Each electrode in the cell initially weighs 10.0 g. Mer 200 mA is passed through the cell for 100 minutes, the cell was disassembled and the cathode was found to have a mass of 10.2 g. Ag deposition is the only Faradaic process which occurs in the ccli. What percentage of the current through the cell is due to electronic conduction in doped AgBr?

Explanation / Answer

Solution :-

Lets first convert 200 mA to A

and 100 min to seconds

100 min * 60 sec / 1 min = 6000 s

200 mA * 1 A / 1000 mA = 0.200 A

now lets calculate the charge

charge (C) = current * time

                  = 0.200 A * 6000 sec

                 = 1200 C

now lets calculate the moles of electrons

1 mol e- = 96500 C

1200 C * 1 mol e- / 96500 C = 0.012435 mol e-

1 mol Ag^+ = 1 mol e-

therefore moles of Ag that can be reduced= 0.012435 mol

lets find the mass of the Ag

mass of Ag = moles * molar mass

                 = 0.012435 mol * 107.87 g per mol

                 = 1.341 g Ag

Actual mass of Ag dipossited = 10.2 g - 10.0 g = 0.2 g

So lets calculaet the percentage of the current through the cell

% of current = (0.2 g / 1.341 g 0*100%

                     = 14.9 %

we can round it to the 15 %
