Question

10.111 Identify the oxidizing agent and reducing agent in the reaction 10.112 The black tarnish that forms on silver is silver sulfide, Ag2S. The tarnish can be removed by wrapping the silver with a piece of aluminum foil and placing it in a solution of NaHCO3 (baking soda) to allow for the flow of ions. Explain how the aluminum foil aids in removing the tarnish. 10.113 Under what circumstances does fluorine not have an oxidation state of -1? 10.114 Which of the following are electron-transfer - reactions? For those that are, indicate which reactant is the reducing agent and which reactant is the oxidizing agent. Assign an oxidation state to each atom in HCN. (Hint: Begin with a dot diagram.) 10.116 A battery is made by connecting strips of lead and palladium and dipping each metal into a solution of its ions (Pb2+ and Pd2+, respectively). Over time, the mass of the lead strip decreases and the mass of the palladium strip increases.

Explanation / Answer

Electron transfer reactions are those in whch transfer of electrons take place from one species to another species which can easily be identified by a change in Oxidation number of the species.

(a) 3 H2SO3 + 2 HNO3 ---> 3 H2SO4 + 2NO + H2O

O.N of S in H2SO3 = +4 and O.N of S in H2SO4 = +6

O.N of N in HNO3 = +5 and O.N of N in NO = +2

Since there is change in O.N hence it is an Electron transfer reaction

O.N of S is increasing so it is getting oxidized and therefore H2SO3 is the reducing agent and HNO3 is the oxidizing agent

(b) Mg + H2O -----> Mg(OH)2 + H2

O.N of Mg = 0 and O.N of Mg in Mg(OH)2 = +2

O.N of H in H2O = +1 and O.N of H in H2 = 0

Since there is a change in O.N so it is an Electron transfer reaction

Mg is getting oxidized so it is the reducing agent and H2O is oxidizing agent

(c) SO3^2- + 2H+ -------> SO2 + H2O

O.N of S in SO3^2- = +4 and O.N of S in SO2 = +4

Since there is no change in O.N value so it is not an Electron transfer reaction.

(d) PbO + CO ------> Pb + CO2

O.N of Pb = +2 and O.N of Pb = 0

O.N of C in CO = +2 and O.N of C in CO2 = +4

Since there is change in O.N so it is an Electron transfer reaction.

Pb is getting reduced so it is the Oxidizing agent and C is getting oxidized so CO is reducing agent
