1. We are separating a liquid from a solid. Liquid being anethole (b.p. 234 oC) and solid being anise seed. We would use a steam distillation for it. Steam is passed through the anise seed which carries the anethole along with its vapor and when cools down separates into two phase.
2. Crude oil refining by distillation wold use a fractional distillation unit since the boiling points of the fractions to be separated are very close. Fractional distillation ensures a clean separation of components by the use of fractionating columns which gives very pure fractions of close boiling liquids.
3. Removing ether from a reaction product can be done easily by using a simple distillation apparatus. The ether boils (b.p. 44 oC) way below the required compound (b.p. 100 oC) and thus will not mix and easily come off when distilled under normal temperature and pressure.
