Question

Assumed simple dominant and recessive genetics apply for this discussion. You are looking at two people, one shows a dominant phenotype (in this example a tall person) and the other a recessive phenotype (in this example a short person). Is it possible to positively determine the genotype of either person? If so which one and why. Explain your answer. Assumed simple dominant and recessive genetics apply for this discussion. Explanation / Answer

Genetics how we look like we do and certain genetic disorders pass on from one generation to another. Our genes don't just determine how we look there are the genes for the characteristics in our body.every diploid cells contain two copies of each gene. These copies are different molecular forms and are called alleles.you recieve pair of alleles, one from your mother and other from from your father for each characteristic in your body, If the two alleles homozygous (Homo means same). For exmaple if your donates an allele for long height and your father donates an allele that codes for long height ,they have donated homozygous alleles.if they are different one coding for short height and other for long height they are hetrozygous(hetero means different). By looking at alleles we can describe genotype, their genetic makeup,or their phenotype, their outward appearence.

Dominant traits occur more than recessive traits and denoted by capital letter. the trait is fully expressed as phenotype,Recessive traits are denoted by by lower case letters and are fully expressed in homozygous individuals.

For this case For tall Height denoted by "HH" And "hh" for short height however Hh are also tall because H is dominant over allele and is fully expressed.

e.g women is homozygous recessive for being short hh.

and man is hetrozygous recessive for being tall Hh

Hh= tall hh= short .These are the possiblities after crossing the Hh and hh because each parent will contribute one of their two alleles. For each parent there are two possobilities of alleles they can pass. There is only two resulting combinations from all of the possible combinations of contributions.

Hh

h Hh hh

h Hh hh

the phenotype ratio from tall to short children 1:1

and genotypic ratio is 1:1

another exapmle if women is heterozygous for being tall then

Hh

H HH Hh

h Hh hh

Then the phenotype ratio of tall to short children wil be 3:1

and genotype ratio 1:2:1
