Question
Fe[H2O]63+(aq) + 6 CN(aq) Fe[CN]63(aq) + 6H2O(l) Animal was trying to prepare his famous tye-dyed t-shirts. He knows that he can control the cyanide concentration in solution by using the complex ion and his knowledge of equilibrium, but he can’t remember the rules (watch the Muppets…he is kind of out there some times). To get the most intense colors, he needs more cyanide in solution. The equilibrium above is exothermic as written.
Explain whether Animal should make his shirts in hot or cold water. (3 points)
Explain why controlling the pH of the solution would help/hurt Animal’s art project. (5 points)
Why would Animal smell almonds at low pH? (3 points)
Explanation / Answer
As the reaction is exothermic by itself, no extra heat is required. Animal should use cold water for the reaction. Controlling pH would help Animal make his shirts.
For the reaction,
HCN <==> H+ + CN-
At higher pH concentration of H+ would be low so the reaction will shift towards right handside, that is more of CN- will be produced which would help Animal. At low pH the equilibrium will shift towards left and would hurt Animal's art project.
At low pH CN- reacts with added acid H+ to form HCN which smells like bitter almonds.
