Question

A) write out the complete scientific names (including author information) of this species under the traditional and revised classifications
B) would these names be synonyms or homonyms? Explain. Several native pea species belonging to the genera, Pediomelum and Psoralidium, were originally described and placed in the genus Psoralea. Later phylogenetic work by several plant systematists recognized Psoralea as a smaller genus that is limited to the old world. As a result, Psoralea tenuiflora, a species first described by Pursh, was redefined by Rydberg and moved to the genus Psoralidium.

Explanation / Answer

A) Traditional Classification: Psoralea tenuiflora (Author: Pursh)

Revised Classification: Psoralidium tenuiflorum (Author: Per Axel Rydberg)
Pursh: Frederick Pursh was a German-American botanist, born Feb 4, 1774. He is largely kniwn for his contribution to botany. His major breakthrough came when he began working as a curator for Benjamin Smith Barton. As a part of his duty as a curator, he undertook a lot of traveling. This reflected on him as a diligent botanist.
Per Axel Rydberg: He was a Swedish-born American botanist. It was during one of his botanical exlplorations that he renamed the species Psoralea tenuiflora. He was the first curator of the New York Botanical Garden Herbarium.

B) These names are synonyms because they both belong to the same species.
Homonyms have identical spellings but both the names belong to different taxon.
