Question

Refer to the mass spectrum of dichioromethane shown below to answer the questions below: What peak represents the parent peak? What peaks represents M + and M + 2 and M + 4 (respectively)? What peak represents the base peak? Propose structures for fragment ions at m/z = 35, 49, and 84. Refer to the mass spectrum of 2-methylbutane shown below to answer the questions below: What peak represents the parent peak? What peak represents M*? What peak represent the base peak? Propose structures for fragment ions at m/z = 57, 43, and 29.

Explanation / Answer

22. a) parent peak is the molecular ion peak which is at m/z of 84

b) The M+ peak is considering all the normal isotopes of C, H and Cl with 12+2+35 + 35 = 84

M+2 peak arising when one Cl is a 37-isotope so that 12+2+35 + 37 = 86

M+4 peak arising when both Cl are 37-isotope so that 12+2+37 + 37 = 88

c) base peak is the peak with 100% relative intesnity which is at 49m/z

d)Structure at 35 = Cl+

Structure at 49 = CH2Cl+

structure at 84 = CH2Cl2
