TE PROBLEM Kim S.Tree of the Gunk Chemical C of the Gunk Chemical Company was a tempting to make the compound ba m phosphate Ba POThis compound in water and has a very high melting point. Therefore Kim's supervisor thought that barium phosphate wouild be a good nsluble moound to use as an additive for a special freproof heat shield the company was making. Kim felt Ba(P0z could be easily made by adding by adding together a soluble barium compound with a soluble phosphate compound and then filtering the solid. Kim selected a2H20 and (NH4)2HPO. Kim put these compounds into water solution and mixed the solutions together. A white sold was fomed, but it did not seem to be the proper amount (ie. have the correct weight in grams) or have the right chemical and physical properties. Looking at the problem further, Kim realized that there were three reactions that might have occurred as follows: MMaq) + 2 (NH4)2HP04(aq) + 2 H20 Ba(H2P04)2(s) + 2 NHaCI(aq) + 2 NH4OH Baca(a) + (NH4)2HPOu(aq) Ba(HPO4)(s) + 2 NH4Cl 3BaCl2(aq) + 2 (NH4):HPO4(aq) Baa(PO)ds) + 4 NH4Cl(aq) + 2 HCl(aq) other experiments to perform. Therefore, the supervisor has assigned you to find out which compound Kim made. The has suggested that using a modified Job's method can do the experiment 61

Explanation / Answer

R = k (the stoichiometric ratio)

where the two lines cut each other R can be valued as

R=(1-x)/x

As R=k

And the rxn is given as A + kB <===> mD

R=k~1

so the product was given by rxn number 2
