In this experiment, we carried out a Diels-Alder reaction where dicyclopentadiene was thermally cracked to form cyclopentadiene, which was added to a Craig's tube containing Maleic anhydride, ethyl acetate, and hexane. D. Post-Lab Questions 1. What do you suspect would have happened it 1.6 mL of ethyl acetate were used as the reaction solvent as opposed to 0.8 mL of ethyl acetate and 0.8 mL of hexane? Hint: refor to the crystallization experiment ane? Hint: refer to 2. Paraffin oil has a boiling point greater than 370 °C. What was the purpose of adding paraffin to the reaction flask when cracking dicyclopentadiene?Explanation / Answer
1. If you have 1.6 ml of ethylacetate as opposed to 0.8 ml of ethylacetate and 0.8 ml of hexane as the solvent in the reaction, your product will not recrystallise out of solution. Dilution would increae solubility giving low yield of product formed.
2. Paraffin maintains the temperature necessary for the cracking of dicyclopentadiene to cyclopentadiene. Cyclopentadiene tends to dimerise very rapidly when coold down, so to avoid this the high temperature of paraffin is necessary.
