Question

1. Electromagnetic radiation travels through vacuum at a speed of ___m/s?
2. A local radio station often broadcast on the 6-meter band. The frequency of this electromagnetic radiation is ___MHz?
3. What is the frequency of light (/s) that has a wavelength of 3.25x10^-6cm?
4. What is the frequency (/s) of a photon that has an energy of 4.15x10^-18J?
5. What is the wavelength (nm) of a photon that has an energy of 4.15x10^-18J?
6. According to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, it is impossible to know precisely both the ___ and the ___ of an electron.
7. Write all possible quantum number of an electron in a 5d subshell.
8. All of the subshells in a given shell have the same energy in the hydrogen atom. In a many-electron atom, the subshells in a given shell do not have the same energy. Why?

Explanation / Answer

1. 3.00 x 108 m/s

2. 50-54 MHz

3.

wavelength x frequency=c= 3x10^8 m/s

frequency= 3x10^8/3.25x10^-8 (in m) = 9.23 x 10^16 s-1

4.

E=h x frequency

h=6.626x10^-34

E=4.15x10^-18

frequency= E/h=6.626x10^15

5.

wavelength= 3x10^8/6.626x10^15 = 4.52 x10^-8 m-1

6. position and momentum

7. n=5

l=2

ml= -2,-1,0,1,2

ms=+1/2 or -1/2

8.

The hydrogen atom only has one energy level (shell). The first energy level also contains only one sublevel, 1s sublevel (subshell), which can only hold two electrons. When you get to the second energy level in the second period on the periodic table, it has two sublevels, the 2s and the 2p sublevels. Both of the electrons in the 2s sublevel have the same energy. The 2p sublevel can hold 6 electrons. All of the electrons in the 2p sublevel have the same energy, which is higher than the energy in the 2s sublevel. So, as we move down the periods on the periodic table, we move from the first energy level to the seventh energy level. Each energy level contains specific numbers of sublevels, and all of the atoms within a particular sublevel have equal energy.
