Question

1) write the net ionic equations to show how the carbon dioxide/bicarbonate buffer neutralized acid and base

2) Did the carbonate buffer lose any gas while HCL was added? If so, what was the gas? (show net ionic equation)

3)Is there a connection between this loss of gas and the lower capacity of the carbonate buffer on the second addition of NaOH? Explain (using net ionic equations)

Please help me I have tried to answer these equations! They are based off of a lab that we blew carbon dioxide into certain solutions and then measured their pH levels

Explanation / Answer

1. Net ionic equation for the buffer

CO2 (g) + H2O (l) <-----> H+ (aq) + HCO3- (aq) (H2CO3)

2. Yes. The carbonate buffer will release CO2 gas to the atmosphere.

H2CO3 (aq) + H+ (aq) -----> H3O+ (aq) + CO2 (g)

3. Yes. Again CO2 should be purged back to the solution, otherwise pH of the buffer solution will raise slowly.

H+ (aq) + HCO3- (aq) + OH- (aq) ----> HCO3- (aq) + H2O (l)
