Table A chemical engineer is studying the two reactions shown in the table below In each case, he fills a reaction vessel with some mixture of the reactants and products at a constant temperature of 92.0C and constant total pressure. Then, he measures the reaction enthalpy AH and reaction entropy as of the first reaction, and the reaction enthalpy H and reaction free energy G of the second reaction The results of his measurements are shown in the table Complete the table That is, calculate for the first reaction and as for the second (Make sure any numbers you enter have the correct number of significant digits ) Then, decide whether, under the conditions the engineer has set up, the reaction is spontaneous, the reverse reaction is spontaneous, or neither forward nor reverse reaction is spontaneous because the system is at equilibrium. Explanation / Answer
Solution :-
Calculating the Delta G for the reaction 1 at temperature 92 C +273 = 365 K
Formula
Delta G= delta H – (T*delta S)
= (-107.0 kJ )-(365 K * (-323 J per K * 1 kJ / 1000 J))
= 10.9 kJ
Since delta G is positive and entropy is negative therefore the forward reaction is not spontaneous
So the reverse reaction is spontaneous
What is spontaneous = reverse reaction
Now lets calculate the delta S for the second reaction
Delta S= Delta H/ T
= (92.0 kJ * 1000 J / 1 kJ) / 365 K
= 252 J/K
Here delta G is 0 kJ and the delta S of the reaction is positive therefore the forward reaction is spontaneous .
What is spontaneous = this reaction
