Question
Question is: Hydrogen has two naturally occurring isotopes H (atomic mass 1) and D (atomic mass 2). A mixture containig an equal number of moles of H2 and D2 is allowed to effuse down a capillary. What percent of the molecules effusing first will be D2?
My answer: Since the rate of effusion of a gas has the same form as Graham's Law of Diffusion, and given D2 has a molar mass of aproximately twice that of H2, then the lighter H2 molecules will be first. Thus, 0% of the D2 molecules will effuse first.
Explanation / Answer
Solution :-
Rate of the diffusion of the gas is calculated as
rate H2/rate D2 = molar mass of D2/molar mass of H2
= 4.04/2.02
= 2
So when 1 molecule of the D2 effuse at that time 2 molecules of H2 will diffuse
so the percent of the D2 = (1/(1+2)*100%
= 33.33 %
