Question

Use the following characteristics in mice to answer the questions. Assume one-gene, complete dominance for each trait. G = gray, g = brown L = long hair, 1 = short hair C = curly tail, c = straight tail W = long whiskers, w = short whiskers E = big ears, e = small ears a. Cross GGLLCCwwee with ggllCCwwEE. What are the phenotype and genotype of the F1 generation? You can draw an F1 mouse if you like. b. If the F1 generation is crossed (with another F1), what is the probability that the offspring will have the genotype GgLlCCwwee?

Explanation / Answer

Answer (a): GGLLCCwwee will produce only one type of gametes as GLCwe and Individual ggllCCwwEE will produce gametes as only glCwE type of gametes. Now crossing both the individual of different types of gametes as (GLCwe X glCwE) with the help of punnet square, in F1 generation the individual produced will as follows:

Gametes

GLCwe

GLCwe

glCwE

GgLlCCwwEe

GgLlCCwwEe

glCwE

GgLlCCwwEe

GgLlCCwwEe

All the individuals produced after crossing will have grey colour, long hair, curly tail, short whiskers and big ears. Phenotype and genotype of individual will have all the dominant characters except short whiskers which is recessive in nature. And the phenotypic as well as genotypic ration will be 100% or 1 in this case.

Answer (b): Now F1 generation individuals will produce 16 types of gametes as per formula 2^n = 4 where n refers to number of heterozygous genes. When crossing one F1 to another F1 generation individual there will be production of 256 individuals, among all there is probability of getting GgLlCCwwee individuals is 0.14 by applying probability rule.
