Question
The chemical reaction converts an alcohol into a ketone. Explain (in words) how you would use infrared spectroscopy to determine if all of the alcohol had reacted and that a ketone was the product of the reaction. In your explanation you need to specify the shape and frequency of the infrared absoprtion peak that goes away when the alcohol reacts and what functional group it represents, and the sahpe and frequency of the infrared absoption peak that grows in as the reaction progresses, and what functional group it represents.
Explanation / Answer
According to infrared spectroscopy to determine alcohols and ketones, we have to observe type of absorption peak, generally we will observe Strong intensity absorption peak at 1725-1705 cm-1 for ketones and medium absorption peak for free alcoholic group at 3650-3600 cm-1 and hydrogen bonded alcohol also have medium absorption peak at 3400-3200 cm-1.
If Alcohol is converted to Ketone in the chemical reaction then we will observe a medium absorption peak at 3650-3600 cm-1 changes to Strong absorption peak at 1725-1705 cm-1. This indicates that alcohol is completely converted to Ketone.
