Question
1)Ethane from Marcellus shale gas is burned in a furnace at the rate of 200 m3/min. The furnace uses 10% excess air.
a)What would be air flow rate in m3/h?
b)The ambient temperature outside is 22 °C. You are asked to design the air inlet pipe. What would be the inside diameter of the pipe if the air velocity cannot exceed 4 m/s?
c)What would be the outlet gas composition and volumetric flow rate if the gases leave at 150 °C
d)What would be the diameter of the exit gas pipe if the velocity is restricted to 5 m/s?
Explanation / Answer
CH3CH3 + 7/2 O2 = 2CO2 + 3H2O
a. For gases, volume is proportional to moles. Air has 21% oxygen.
Air flow rate
= 200 × (7/2) / 0.21 ×1.1
= 3667 m3/min
= 3667 * 60 m3/h
= 22 × 104 m3/h
b. Air flow rate = 3667/60 = 61 m3/s
Through the inlet pipe air will flow at a rate of 61 m3/s.
So, r2 × 4 m = 61 m3
r = ( 61/4) m
= 2.2 m
Diameter = 2 * 2.2 = 4.4 m
