In a reactor with a significant excess of c12 . its observed that the overall conversion of benzene is 92 .2 % with 7 7 .7% reacting via the desired pathway of reaction 1. For each 100 moles of benzene fed to this reactor, how many moles of HCL are produced?

The primary chlorination reaction of benzene produces one moles of HCl from one mole of benzene and undesired parallel side reaction produces three moles of HCl from one mole of benzene.

Since, conversion of benzene is 92.2%; out of 100moles of benzene fed into the reactor only 92.2 moles is converted into product. The percentage of benzene converted into desired product is 77.7%. Therefore, 77.7 moles of benzene produces 77.7 moles of HCl along with desired product.

The percentage of benzene converted into undesired product is 92.2% - 77.7 % = 14.5%

Therefore, 14.5 moles of benzene is converted into undesired side product.

Hence, amount of HCl produced by conversion of benzene into undesired side product = 14.5 X 3 = 43.5 moles of HCl.

Thus, total moles of HCl produced = 77.7 + 43.5 = 121.2 moles.
