Question

4A student test d water with 2% Nad as a p Mible solvent for the separation of a mixture that could as a pos contain one or more of the follwing G3, Y5, R3, and B1. He obtained the chromatogram of the individual dyes and the mixture shown below sevent front 3 YS (a) Measure the distance the solvent front moved. solvent front b) Measure the distance each spot moved RBI SS (c) Calculate the Ry for each component. d) Which dyels) can the student say, with certainty, is/are present in the mixture? (e) Is water with 2% NaCl a good choice for the resolution of the mixture? Briefly explain.

Explanation / Answer

Solution :-

d) From the TLC plate it is observed that the G3,Y5, and B1 shows the separation but the R3 doesn’t move much from the base line

So student can definetly say that the component B1 ,G3 and Y5 are present certainly.

e) Since the separation of the R3 is not good also the G3 and B1 have the nearly same Rf values ( they move nearly same distance) therefore the spots are not much distinguished therefore we can say that the 2% NaCl solvent system is not good for this separation.
