Question

During the winter of your third year of medical school, you had the chance to work in a cancer lab, to analyze gene from patients. You were given data through microarray so you can compare cancer with the normal tissues. ( hint: oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes) -> discovery of your own.

1. with help of microarray what would you classify as tumor suppressor gene and potential oncogenes.

2. What experiment would you do to test the suppressor gene or potential oncogene

3. What technique will you apply if you think chromosomal translocation are the cause of abnormal gene activity.

Explanation / Answer

1) DNA micro array will help us to learn about wheather a potential oncogene or suppressor gene is present. It also helps to know wheather these genes are mutated or not. This can be understood by studying the intensity of the colors and ratio of cells. If the ratio is more than one, oncogenes are present and tumor suppressor genes are mutated. This causes normal cells to divide rapidly and cause tumors.
