Question

sapling learning the faculty at University of Arizona e following graph shows the concentration of ozone, O3(g), in parts per million (ppmv) as a function of altitude in the atmosphere. The region with high ozone concentrations defines the so-called ozone layer. Estimate the concentration of 0,(g) in mg/m3 at the temperature and pressure at which ozone concentrations reach their maximum (indicated on the figure). Thermosphere o 4 x 10 mg/ T 40 oC P 2 x 103 atm o 4 x 102 mg/m Mesosphere o 2 x 10 mg/m E 40- o 2 x 10 mg/l Stratosphere Troposphere ozone (ppmv)

Explanation / Answer

Concentration of O3 = 8 ppmv

let volume be 1m^3
then volume of O3 = 8*10^-6 m^3

use:
P*V = n*R*T to get number of moles of O3
2*10^-3* 8*10^-6 = n* 0.0821* (273-40)
n = 8.36*10^-10 mol

mass of a mol O3 = 48 gm
mass of O3 = 8.36*101^-10 * 48
     = 4*10^-8 gm
      = 4*10^-5 mg

Since volume was 1 m^3

Concentration = 4*10^-5 mg/m^3
