Question

help me please 3. A mixture of organic materials was stirred with a mixture of solvents until all the organic material dissolved. The resulting mixed liquids were placed into a conical vial, and the liquids were allowed to separate. For each of the following organic material and solvents, determine j) in which solvent each organic material will be found and ii) which solution will be found on top and which will be found on the bottom. a) benzoic acid and p-dichlorobenzene (neutral compound) with 1M NaOH and hexane b) biphenyl benzoate and p-phenylphenol (both are neutral compounds) with water and dichloromethane (CH2Cl2)

Explanation / Answer

Remember like dissolves like

a) Benzoic acid is polar and will get dissolved NaOH and dichlorobenzne being non polar will get dissolved in hexane.

Hexane being less denser than water, will on the top so the solution of dichlorobenzene in hexane will be on top and the solution of benzoic acid in NaOH will be on bottom.

b) Both compounds are neutral however both are not non polar

Biphenyl benzoate and p-phenyl phenol have following structure

Due to presence of hydroxyl group in p-phenyl phenol it is polar and will get dissolved in water ( however it is sparingly soluble in water solublity being 56.2 mg/l),while biphenyl benzoate will get dssolved in dichloromethane

so we will have top layer of biphenyl benzoate in dichloromethane, and bottom layer of phenyl phenol in water.
