Question
Jesse, Heisenburg’s partner, is a known criminal and thief. Heisenburg employs Jesse to replace a solid cylinder of red phosphorus that sits on a weight-sensitive, alarmed pedestal with a can of sand. The can holding the sand and the red phosphorus have the exact same dimensions (length = 22 cm and radius = 3.8 cm).
a. Calculate the mass of each cylinder (ignoring the mass of the can itself). The density of red phosphorus = 2.34 g/cm3 and the density of sand = 3.00 g/cm3 .
b. Did Jesse set off the alarm?
Explanation / Answer
a) we will calculate the volume of cylinder first
WE knwo that
Volume of cylinder = pi X r2 X h
r = radium
h = height or length
pi = 3.14
So volume = 3.14 X 3.8 X 3.8 X 22 = 997.51 cm^3
Now lets calculate the mass from density and volume
MAss = density X volume
Mass of red phosphorous = 2.34 X 997.51 = 2334.18 grams
MAss of sand = 3 X 997.51 = 2992.53 grams
b) Yes the theif sets off the trap as the mass of sand is higher than the mass of phophorous.
