Question
Which pair (HBr or KBr) have a greater dipole moment? why?
9. which compound in the following pair would you expect to have the greater dipole moment u? Why? Select dhe single best answer. HBr or KBr A. Hydrogea bromide has t. larger dipole moment liaus, pas luin lara inatur atomic radius than hydrogen. B. Potassium bromide has the larger dipale moment bernse hydragn has a greater C. Hydrogen bromide has the larger dipole moment, because potassium is more D. Potassium bromide has the larger dipole moment, because hydrogen is mor atomk radius than potassium electronegative than hydrogen electronegative than potassium mage-0923 ) mage-4822Explanation / Answer
answer : D )
KBr has larger dipole moment, because hydrogen is more electronegative than potassium.
explanation :
dipole moment of HBr = 0.82 debye
dipole moment of KBr = 10.5 D
why KBr has higher dipole moment ?
dipole moment = magnitude of charges x distance = q x r
in KBr the charge magnitude very high compared to HBr . because KBr is perfectly ionic compound which gives K+ and Br- ions .
but in case of HBr it is not perfect ionic . it is polar covalent molecule. so the magnitude of q value decreases and also due to small electronegativety difference between H and Br distance is also low
