which statement best describes the difference between Darwin and Lamarck?select one:a) unlike darwin, lamarck did not accept evolution.b) Darwin presented a convincing case for the fact of evolution;lamarck did not.c) both Darwin and lamarck presented convincing cases for the fact of evolution, but only Darwin was able to present a convincing case for how evolution occurred. d)both Darwin and lamarck presented convincing evidence for how evolution occurred, but Darwin had better scientific connections, so the credit went to darwin.e)lamarck extended Darwin's theories of evolution.

Explanation / Answer

The correct answer is C.

(reason : Jean Baptiste de Lamarck is usually remembered for his pioneer works to understand evolution and as the propagator of the theory in " inheritance of acquired characteristics" which stated that the characters acquired by an individual in an lifetime is transmitted to the offsprings and the base of this was the use and disuse model. Lamarck's theory held that species underwent changes in response to changes in their environment. One such example quoted by him was the case of long neck of Giraffes.
Lamarck said that, in a primitive world the giraffes had a short neck but as trees began to grow taller, giraffes responded to the change by growing longer necks so that they could continue to feed.
His also said was that this change was permanent for as long as the new environmental conditions continued to apply.
Thus according to Lamark, "nature chose the best possible solution and, species responded accordingly.
While Chales Darwin the propagator of the theory natural selection and survival of the fittest implied that due to environment underwent changes, the species affected by these changes underwent changes in response to adapt and survive in the new environment as nature selects the most important trait for adaptations.
So essentially, among a population of variabl sized neck giraffes, the ones with a lonk neck had a survival edge over other and were naturally selected and their progeny gave rise to the mordern day giraffes because those ancestors with a longer neck had better access to food than ones with shorter necks, they reproduced more, outnumbering and eventually replacing the short-neck ones.

Thus both Darwin and Lamark suggested the mode of evolution but arguably Darwin's statement had a more scientific point of view for evolution than that of Lamarck's.
