Question

VI: underneath your recorded observations on the following pages you will be asked to write approptiate equilibrium equation and to explain your observations. the explanation of your observations must include the direction of any equilibrium ahift, why it shifted in that direction, and how that led to your obsrrvation. when a competing equilibrium causes the shift, include appropriate equation.

Explanation / Answer

Fe3+(aq) + SCN-(aq)     FeSCN2+(aq)

(colourless)                                           (red-brown)

If initially we have Fe+3 in the test tube and if we add SCN- in the tube then the colour of solution will be red.

Now due to addition of SCN- the reaction will move towards forward direction and the colour will become more dark red (Le Chatelier's Principle). .

Due to addition of Fe(NO3)3 we are adding Fe+3 in the solution and hence increasing its concentration, it will change the equilbrium towards forward direction due to more concentration of reactant. It wil increase the red colour.

If we add NaOH to the test tube then the hydroxide ions will react with NaOH to give yellow red precipitate of Ferric hydroxide. The equilibrium will shift to backward direction, the colour will be yello

If we add H2O it will dilute the solution and will faint the colour of the solution
