Question

If the asteroid fragment contains carbon, it may burn when entering Earth's atmosphere. What is the most likely compound to result from this process? Which type of chemical bond would result from this process? Of the types chemical reactions studied in this course, which type would this be? Be sure to fully explain all of your answers. Explanation / Answer

Earth's atmosphere contains Oxygen and the carbon in asteroid reacts with this Oxygen in atmosphere as it comes into contact.

Burning in air is nothing but combustion of hydrocarbon with O2 to form CO2 and water

Carbon (in asteroid) + O2 ---------heat------------> CO2 + H2O

Covalent double bond (type of chemical bond) is formed by Oxygen with the carbon of asteroid and the type of reaction is called "Combustion"

O=C=O is the chemical structure of Carbondioxide
