LD50 is know as Lethal Dose 50%. So basically it is the amount of substance required to kill 50% of the group of test animals. And mostly this LD50 is used against mice or rats.

And it is used in acute context because LD50 is used for measuring the short - term potential for poisoning of tested animals.
