Question

Part A

Consider the following multistep reaction:

Based on this mechanism, determine the rate law for the overall reaction.

Express your answer in standard MasteringChemistry format. For example, if the rate law is k[A]3[B]2 type k*[A]^3*[B]^2.

Part B

Consider the following multistep reaction:

Based on this mechanism, determine the rate law for the overall reaction.

Express your answer in standard MasteringChemistry format. For example, if the rate law is k[C]3[D]2 type k*[C]^3*[D]^2.

Explanation / Answer

PART A:

rate always depends upon slowest step

in the mechanism from reactant side there are no intermediates present

so

rate law = k[A][B]

PART B:

rate always depends upon slowest step. so

rate = k [CD][D]                        ----------------------(1)

in the above rate law there is intermediate 'CD'

so we have to findout CD

in the mechanism first step

C + D -----------> CD

equilibrium constant k1 = [CD]/[C][D]

[CD] = k1 [C][D]                              ------------------(2)

from equations 1 & 2

rate = k k1 [C][D]^2

so

rate law = K [C][D]^2                       (K = k k1)
