Question

Please answer all questions with explanation

PRE-LAB ASSIGNMENT Please read over the entire experiment before attempting the pre-lab assignment. 1) Notice in the procedure that you need to prepare a 1:4 dilution of the wine. What types and sizes of glassware will you use to prepare this dilution? Draw a rough picture of each piece of glassware too. Be sure to plan to make enough solution for all of your trials! 2) A chemist had a bottle of HCl (aq) of unknown concentration. She performed a titration experiment in order to determine its concentration. She pipeted 15.00 mL of the HCI solution into an Erlenmeyer flask. She then added about 20 mL of deionized water and 3 drops of phenolphthalein indicator dye to the flask. She titrated this mixture with 0.07438 M NaOH (aq), and obtained a permanent, pale pink endpoint after the addition of 21.76 mL of NaOH (aq). Given that the density of the HCl solution was 1.092 g/mL, determine the concentration of the original HCl acid solution in units of a) Molarity b) Percent by mass (Hint: refer to Skill Builder 6 to see the relationship between molarity and percent mass units...how will you convert between moles and mass of solute? How will you convert between liters of solution and grams of solution?)

Explanation / Answer

In order to answe the first two questions. I will be required to read the pre-lab assignment. I can help you with the third:

1) The principal acids found in wine, are tartaric acid, potassium hydrogen tartrate (cream of tartar), malic acid and potassium hydrogen malate.

2) Since potassium hydrogen tartrate and potassium hydrogen malate are derivatives of tartaric acid, it is reasonable assumption

3) Titration technique is used

4) Total acidity is reported as grams of tartaric acid per 100 mL of wine.
