Question

Please provide the answer with a brief explanation.

14. A voltaic concentration cell is constructed with two silver-silver chloride electrodes. The concentrations of Cl- ion in two compartments are 0.0222 M and 2.22 M, respectively. Select the WRONG statement from the following: A) Oxidation takes place in the compartment that has 2.22 M Cl- ions B) The negative electrode is in the compartment that has 2.22 M Cl- C) Reduction takes place in the compartment that has 00222 M Cl- ions D) Anode compartment has 2.22 M Cl- and cathode compartment has 0.0222 M Cl- E) Cathode compartment has 2.22 M Cl- and anode compartment has 0.0222 M Cl-

Explanation / Answer

I already answer this before, so I'll paste the answer:

If Oxidation takes place in the compartment that has 2.22 M Cl, means that it's the negative electrode. Therefore this means that it should be in the anode for a voltaic cell, and the reduction actually takes place in the compartment that has 0.02222 M Cl, so it's the positive electrode (cathode).

For all of this, the only option that's not right, would be option E.
