Question

The following is a list of metals and alloys:

Brass, Plain carbon steel, Gray cast iron, Platinum, Titanium alloy, Tool steel, Aluminum,   Tungsten, Zinc, Magnesium, Stainless steel. Select from this list the one metal or alloy that is best for each of the following applications, and cite at least one reason for your choise:

a)Drill bit

b) As a pyrotechnic (fireworks)

c) High temperature furnace elements to be used in in oxidizing atmosphere

c) Condensing heat exchanger for steam

d) Cryogenic(i.e., very low temperature)container [consider brittle/ductile transition]

e) The block of an internal combustion engine

f) Jet engine turbofan blades

Explanation / Answer

The following among the list given find applications as,

a)Drill bit : Tool steel. They are easy for the process of drilling due to its strength.

b) As a pyrotechnic (fireworks) : Magnesium. They readily react with air or oxygen and hence are used as a pyrotechnic or in fireworks.

c) High temperature furnace elements to be used in in oxidizing atmosphere: Platinum. They are highly resistant to corrosion at high temeratures making them suitable for these applications.

c) Condensing heat exchanger for steam : Stainless steel. Stainless steel of wide varieties find applications is a number of areas. The heat exchanger for steam is one such application. They do not react with steam and is most suittable for this application.

d) Cryogenic(i.e., very low temperature)container [consider brittle/ductile transition] : Plain carbon steel.

e) The block of an internal combustion engine : Gray cast iron. It has high stiffness and has high thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity.

f) Jet engine turbofan blades : Titanium alloy. Titanium alloy can be used for high temperature applications. IT can resist the change in temperature conditions and can be easily used in Jet engines turbofan blades. Titanium alloys are extreme thermal resistant, corrosion resistant, light in weight. They have very high tensile strength and is tough at very high temperatures, making them useful for a wide number of applications.
