Bags were placed over several leaves of a small poplar tree. In the middle of the day radioactive 4CO2 was placed in one of the bags that surrounded a full-grown leaf. By the middle of that same night, very little I4CO2 was detected in the original bag, but it was detected in a bag that covered a small, expanding leaf. Describe the most plausible route that the carbon followed in moving into the plant, from one leaf to another and then out of the plant. In describing a possible route include the names of tissues, cells and organelles. Also in your explanation please use the terms source and sink and the terms for any other processes, substances that are necessary for a complete explanation. (8 pts)Explanation / Answer
Plants take in carbon dioxide present in the air during the process of photosynthesis and exactly reverse occurs in case of respiration. So, when the first plant respired out radioactive carbon dioxide, it was then taken up by the leaf on a nearby plant through the process of photosynthesis.
