Question

need help figuring this out

Each liquid used in this experiment has an appreciable vapor pressure at room temperature. This means that at room temperature a significant portion of the sample is vaporized, so that when the condensed vapor is weighed, the flask contains sample plus air. The "empty" flask contained only air. The amount of air present during the last weighing is less than the amount of air in the "empty" flask because some of the air has been displaced by the vapor. Would this cause the experimentally determined value of the gram molecular mass to be greater than, less than, or unchanged from the theoretical value? Explain your reasoning.

Explanation / Answer

In lab experiment, the change will so small, that it is not worth calculating the value of the height of aire exerting the pressure to the bottom of the flask (weigth of the air).

In theory, since the amount of air is displaced, I will need to know if the density of such vapor (not the air but the vapor) is equal, greater or less than that of air.

The answer will be as follow:

If density of vapor > density of air ... expect extra weigth

If density of vapor= density of air ... expect the same weigth

If density of vapor < density of air ... expect less weigth
